The Wild West

The American cowboy is an enduring symbol of the wild west.  He has been the hero of countless romantic novels, songs, works of art, movies, and TV shows; and a childhood idol for generations of Americans. 

Now, there is only a handful who live and work according to the traditions of the Old West.

Michael W. Rutherford was inspired by the artwork of Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell and embarked on a three-year photo documentary of the American cowboy for his book titled, The American Cowboy, A Vanishing Breed.
